Research has shown that from April 2018 in the United States there are almost 4.8 million ESL students. If you are in the teaching career not that there is a possibility that you might come across one or more non-native speaking students in your class. Then the native speaking students usually know the language very well though they are still learning more about it every day. Most ESL students have a one-on-one tutor or teacher to help them navigate an English speaking classroom. As a teacher make sure that such students are comfortable in class so that they can be able to learn the English language fast and they won’t feel out of place.
One thing that you need to know is that when it comes to students sometimes they can be better teachers for the ESL students because most students tend to feel comfortable interacting with your fellow peers more than people who are in authority. Utilize the many benefits of both small and large group activities in order to offer support in the classroom. Find a student whose especially help, patient and kind so they can work directly with the ESL student. You need to take your time and talk to the students and give them rules and try to let them understand the purpose of this activities as this helps them understand their roles better. Let the students interact on their own but ensure that you keep a watchful eye on what they are doing so that you can know if they are encouraging the ESL students or not. Group work is sometimes less threatening for ESL students than class-wide instructions where students are called upon and put on the spot.
Visual learning cues benefits all students, but they tend to benefit ESL students more. It does not matter how old your students are using photos and pictures for word association will definitely benefit them a lot. Take a marking pen and a paper and label every item in your class using both English and the language that the native students speak. Label everything in your class for example doors, windows or even chairs so that the students can understand better between tangible items and non-taxable items. When you label using both languages it will not only help the ESL students understand english but also the english speaking students will get to learn a new language.
